On 25th May, a delegation from the All – Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Nutrition for Development attended Rome Nutrition Week 2026 at the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) Headquarters, under the overarching theme, ‘Shaping the Future of Joint Nutrition Action in a Changing World’.
Alongside United Against Malnutrition and Hunger (UAMH) CEO Lord Oates and UAMH Expert Adviser Neema Lugangira, APPG Co-Chair Rt Hon David Mundell MP and Member Steve Race MP attended a range of sessions and meetings with international agencies, civil society movements and decision makers, including with senior representatives at the FAO where the organisation’s broader strategy for coordinating nutrition action was discussed.
The delegation met with Valeria Clara Morales Ancajima, a nutrition youth advocate from Peru. Valeria shared with delegates the work she has been doing with has been SUN Civil Society Network to strengthen the linkages between young people engaged in nutrition and food system transformation. Valeria also leads nutrition work within the World Food Forum Youth Assembly and Young Policy Board.
APPG representatives also met with ICLEI (Local Governments for Sustainability), a global network working with more than 2,500 local and regional governments committed to driving urban development. Active in more than 125 countries, ICLEI discussed with APPG representatives their sustainability policy to drive local action for zero emission, nature-based, equitable, resilient food systems.
At a thematic session on localised and inclusive agrifood solutions hosted by the World Bank and WFP, UAMH Expert Adviser Neema Lugangira delivered closing remarks.
Delegates then held productive conversations with colleagues from Concern, the international humanitarian organisation providing lifesaving support to vulnerable communities at the coalface of the world’s worst crises. They were then briefed on Concern’s nutrition programming, strategy development, and emergency responses.
The summit was also a fruitful opportunity to connect with the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Movement and its youth activists at a reception held by UNICEF.
The APPG Delegation and UAMH representatives also attended meetings with representatives from the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the UN agency exclusively dedicated to transforming agriculture, rural economies, and food systems, as well as the French Permanent Representative to the UN Agencies in Rome, where they discussed the recent Paris N4G and opportunities for collaboration.
Delegates also met with programme specialists of the Child Nutrition Fund, where colleagues were briefed on the financing mechanisms available to tackle global malnutrition and to mobilise Parliamentarians to advocate for UK support for and investment in the CNF.
The delegates also held conversations with officials at The World Food Programme, discussing the impact of geopolitical events including the closure of the Strait of Hormuz on global food supply chains and on humanitarian responses.
The Summit also served as a platform for the launch of ‘The 2026 Global Nutrition Report’. UAMH Expert Adviser Neema Lugangira spoke at the event and closing remarks were made by APPG Co-Chair Rt Hon David Mundell MP, who called for urgent action from the international community to combat global malnutrition.
