The Goal
The Goal of the APPG on Nutrition for Development is to support and challenge the UK government to maintain their leadership on global nutrition.
Nobel economists describe nutrition as ‘the most effective development investment that could be made, with massive benefits for a tiny price-tag’. Good nutrition is the cornerstone to improvements in health and education, reducing inequality and spurring economic growth.
However, the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, increased conflict and the increased frequency of climate induced extreme weather events have devastatingly led to a backsliding in progress. In 2022, 2.8 billion people, or one-third of the world’s population, could not afford a healthy diet. This is deeply concerning and threatens development efforts across the world if the challenge is left unmet.
In March 2025, the French Government will host the next N4G Summit which represents a key opportunity for the UK Government to reaffirm its commitment and dedication to tackling malnutrition.
What does the APPG do?
The APPG works to support and challenge the UK Government to maintain their leadership on global nutrition.
It does this by:
- Raising questions about the Government’s global nutrition policy in Parliament.
- Organising overseas visits to countries where the UK Government supports nutrition programmes and meeting with local actors to understand examples of progress and challenges to meeting nutrition targets.
- Hosting events in Parliament to raise the profile of nutrition issues.
- Building alliances with Parliamentarians in other countries.
- Producing policy documents and briefings.
- Engaging with the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.
